Cultivating That Which Your Heart Desires

by Stacey on July 28, 2010

Note from Stacey: I first met Lavonne over at the lovely Owning Pink website and I was struck by her thoughtful comments. I was delighted when she chose me to help her negotiate a challenging transition. I call Lavonne a “Master Manifestor” because she consistently manifests her desires (whether selling her car or pursuing a new profession) quickly after she declares them. I’m delighted that she shares her process with us here. Read more about Lavonne below.

Desire often gets a bad rap, and it’s easy to see why.

Have you ever stepped foot in the “if only” trap? As in: “If only I had: a better job, a better relationship, more money or a new pair of shoes I’d be happy.”

Most of us have on multiple occasions.

But with time and self-knowledge, and good fortune, we come to see that nothing external leads to lasting happiness. True joy springs from within.

And yet, it’s good, really good, to know what your heart desires.

Desire is the fuel that gets us moving, and keeps us moving. Lack of desire can lead to lethargy and depression.

There’s nothing wrong with desire as long as we hold it with an open hand. As long as we avoid clinging or grasping. As long as we thoroughly enjoy whatever we desire knowing it is a transient moment in time, and not something that will last forever.

So keeping that in mind, how about closing your eyes for a minute and imagine having that which your heart most desires right now: Where are you? What are you wearing? Who’s with you? What do you smell and taste? And most importantly, how do you feel?

That feeling state is often the root of desire…and something you can enjoy as you sit and think about something that has not yet come to pass.

If today is a day where you can’t easily tap into any desires, don’t worry. Invite yourself to be open to the possibility of desire. More likely than not, some hidden desire – or desires – will come creeping in response to your gentle invitation.

I try to do this exercise several times a week. I don’t always manage to do so, but it’s like my 10-minute morning yoga practice, my days always unfold better when I make time for it.
