Manifesting in Rite Aid

by Ruthie on January 14, 2010

Every Thursday, we hope that you enjoy “The Joy Factory: Insights on Joyful Parenting (Among Other Things)” by Ruthie Yarme.  More about Ruthie below.

I used to dread a visit to the pharmacy.  My kids wanted everything that they saw; I found myself exhausted before I made it past the sunscreen aisle.  The problem was that I was often torn between justifying why we can’t buy every pair of sunglasses that we see-and yet wishing to honor that my kids are trying to get their *wants* in life met, just like me.

This all change when I read Scott Noelle’s Daily Groove article “Part-Time Santa, Full-Time Visionary” (an aside…I love, love, love the Daily Groove).  In this article, Scott suggested that we can honor the *wanting* and know that we do not need to be the route through which our kids receive their desired objects.

By our holding the vision that they are connected to the Universe, they feel trust in that connection. I decided that the next time I felt that conflict, I would say something like, “I see that you really want those Lightning McQueen sunglasses.  I believe that if you want them and find joy in that wanting, the universe will get them to you.  Won’t it be fun to see how they come?”

Shortly after I read the article, we were in Rite Aid on a last minute search for swim diapers.  I took a wrong turn and found myself on Plastic-Toy-Heaven Row!  Andre quickly decided that he could not leave the store without a largish helicopter filled with legos.  Isabella walked down the aisle pointing to everything, “I don’t really want that.  Look, Mom, I don’t really want that”, almost proud of her un-desire….until her eyes lit upon the Barbie Fairy doll.

So, channeling Scott Noelle, I smiled and said, ”I see that you really want that Barbie Fairy doll.  I believe that if you want it and find joy in that wanting, the universe will get it to you. Won’t it be fun to see how it comes?”

We continued on our merry way (I somehow distracted Andre after several minutes of DEEP grief suffered upon learning that I was not going to be his “plastic helicopter lego fairy” that day).  We went to a great overnight/swim/birthday party with my brother and nieces and had the sweetest day (and night)…In my world, helicopter and Barbie fairy were forgotten.

A week later, we went to my mom and dad’s house and spent the day with my nieces.  The kids were having a blast.  My parents’ home is magical; it sits on the cliffs overlooking the ocean.  There are windswept trees surrounded by low, craggy brush, lizards, quail. All four kids were running around outside with the sun setting over an unusually calm Pacific…singing into pretend microphones, dancing, filled with joy.

As it was time to leave,  my mom brought out some Valentine gifts- btw, we hadn’t spoken to her all week, so she knew nothing about the Rite Aid adventure.  I wasn’t kidding; I had forgotten about the Rite Aid adventure…until my kids opened the EXACT same helicopter and Barbie Fairy doll that had fueled their strong desires just the weekend before (have to admit that the fairy was blue instead of orange, but Isabella then informed me that she really wanted a blue one).

I sometimes fear that I am just giving lip service to this whole Law of Attraction thing…I believe, but then again, maybe I am just a kook. On this day, I learned (yet again) that I am most definitely not a kook….the Universe really does hear us and give us what we want…all the faster when asked for in joy!!!  It was such a lovely wink from that wonderful Universe and…it WAS fun to see how it came!!

She delights in walking among the towering Redwoods; watching her dog, Ginger, romp along the Pacific; listening to her husband play music of all styles; and pretty much doing anything with her two amazing gurus, Isabella and Andre.  You can find Ruthie’s essays here every Thursday.

I love this story SO much and it is coming at the perfect time! Today is “Mommy Finny Fun Day” where we go wherever Finn wants to go. Sometimes it’s the toy store and I feel like I have to brace myself…until I remember Scott Noelle’s story (I also love them!) and *yours!* Thanks so much for sharing it!

Wow Ruthie, this is so cool. I don’t have kids, but I imagine this is a great way to increase your own faith in how the Universe works in such wonderful ways…and your kids get to grow up practicing it!

Thanks, Stacey and Sue, for your wonderful comments.

Sue, you are so right. My kids have taught me so much in this area. Mainly, how to get myself OUT OF THE WAY!! They have nothing inside resisting their desires (unless I am there with my own resisting energy). As I open myself up, they manifest like crazy! It’s so fun to watch!
